Fallen Leafs

Basking in the levity of sports, cookery, and a few ice cream sandwiches on the side.

Sad to see John Mitchell traded.

Not because I’ll miss him as a hockey player at all. But I’ll miss blaming him for every Leafs problem ever.

Toronto Maple Leafs lose 5-2 to the Calgary Flames. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what ails the Leafs so far this season. The inevitable sophomore slump the second year players were going to suffer this season have not been covered by the returning veterans on the Leafs team. Offensive first players, such as Jason Blake and Mikhail Grabovski have been struggling to score goals, thus, making them quite useless. Supposed two-way players like Matt Stajan, John Mitchell, and Lee Stempniak have been strictly defence-first players for the most part. Even worse is that they haven’t been all that strong defensively either. Nik Hagman and Alex Ponikarovsky have been at their streaky best, scoring multiple points one night then completely blanked the next.

The aforementioned John Mitchell, another grinder misplaced as the current number one centre for the Leafs, is surely thinking of his favourite word right now. Hint: it starts with the letter F and ends with a K.

If you guessed ‘FIRETRUCK’, you would be wrong.
