“This is something you can’t take away, ever, and it’s me doing it. My first game, I took down a 6-foot quarterback.”

~ Mina Johnson, 5-foot-2 left guard, linebacker, and nose tackle powerhouse

What is Mina Johnson’s reward for amassing four sacks in a recent football game? Why sitting out her next game against Northeast because they threatened to forfeit the game playing against a girl, of course

Sexism, alive and well in high school sports, too! Awesome to be living in the year 2011, isn’t it?

ESPN, a horse is not a woman!

Our friend over at From A Left Wing brought this story to our attention:

“ESPN recently launched a website for women sports fans, espnW. Today the site listed its top ten stories in women’s sports. In cooking up this list, ESPN adopted a flexible definition of the category “woman” by including Zenyatta, the horse, as #4.”

I wonder how Serena Williams must feel to know that despite her tremendous achievements this year in tennis, her accomplishments, in ESPN’s eyes, still rank below a horse. ESPN, get better! How could this have possibly been deemed acceptable by espnW’s editors?

Why the long face, women? LOLZ. Stay classy, ESPN.

Everyone is flipping out about the 4 game suspension right now saying that it is too harsh, but we don’t (and probably never will) know all the facts.

  1. Did he KNOW that selling a used jersey for profit was against the rules?  If he did… I honestly think 4 games would have an ok punishment.
  2. Did he plan to do this prematurely?  Was he thinking about it in the summertime, or maybe last year?  If 1 and 2 are true… dude shouldn’t be on the field at all this regular season.
  3. Did he promote it to others (not just put up the listing and walk away)?  IMO, he would be done for the regular season and post season.

Think rationally people.  4 games was only 1 step away.  I know AJ is a great kid and an even greater athlete and NO SEC fan wants to see him off the field at all.  Bragging rights are tarnished now for South Carolina, Arkansas, and Mississippi State [IF they win].

My issue with the NCAA goes beyond the suspension and the length. I think the way they prevent athletes from benefitting from their participation financially is archaic and hypocritical considering how much money they’re making off these kids, many who will never play in the NFL and many who are not getting a real education in exchange.

That, however, is an entirely different situation than the AJ Green suspension. While college athletics is a deeply flawed system, specifically because of how college athletes are treated as disposable commodities for the benefit of a select few, AJ Green’s actions are not the way about enacting change. Severe doubts remain whether college athletics will ever be reformed (as in 0%), but I’m not sure if this issue is all that relevant to the major injustices within the NCAA and their “employees” - I mean, athletes.
