How (and Why) Athletes Go Broke →
A sobering Sports Illustrated article about the countless number of professional athletes who become financially destitute shortly after their playing careers end. To quote friend of the blog, jrwendelman (Heroes in Rehab): It’s sad the kind of situations these guys end up in as a result. Personally, I think Theoren Fleury’s recent comeback attempt has as much to do with his financial troubles –...

– Tomas Kaberle, who was so happy, his cheeks were an even brighter pinkish hue. A career-high 5 points will do that to anyone. (Quote via AP)

– And with that, Fire Joe Morgan reinvigorated Deadspin for one day. Remember that day? With Deadspin essentially burning every bridge they have with mainstream media, does anyone really care about the smut and lust being peddled by BIG BAD ESPN? Deadspin seems to think so, which is a shame. I wonder...

The story of Larry Kwong: Breaking the Colour... →
An illuminating and fascinating post by Hungry Leafs Fan about Larry Kwong and his dream to play in the NHL. Kwong was a Chinese-Canadian hockey player who unofficially broke hockey’s colour barrier when he briefly entered an NHL game a full 10 years before Willie O’Ree made his debut as the first black hockey player in the NHL. On March 13, 1948, Larry Kwong suited up for the New...

Vlad bests Pettitte to silence critics →
doublesteal: He approached Guerrero during the team’s workout on Sunday and showed him what reporters had been writing about him after going just 1-for-7 in the pivotal Game 2 that saw the Yankees win in extra innings to take a 2-0 lead in the ALCS. “I told him that these guys think you’re done but that I knew that he still had horns on his head,” Hatcher said. The strategy certainly worked, as...

Checketts to drop Limbaugh from Rams bid →
brighteryellow: (First - I could give two shits about Rush Limbaugh owning the Rams. Seriously. So he’s political. That’s great. Who isn’t political? At least that’s what he’s paid to do. Yes, Rush Limbaugh is paid to be controversial. Do I agree with him? Never. Does that mean he shouldn’t buy the Rams? No.) That said. If the NFL won’t let Checketts’ bid go through because of Limbaugh and...

Vindication from Keith Law (Again)
Matthew (Seattle): In reference to the whole Roy Halladay spectacle a couple of months ago, do you believe that there were any offers out there that Ricciardi et al should have taken? All of the rumors that floated out seemed woefully subpar (think what Cleveland received for Cliff Lee) and despite JP Ricciardi's obvious shortcomings, I can't fault him for deciding against accepting inferior value for an asset such as Halladay. Thoughts?
Klaw (ESPN): No. He was right to reject the offers they got. Anyone who says the Phillies' offer was enough is overrating the players offered.
